Prime Lock vs BSS B2B Lock, Login & Password

BSS is the right answer if you are already running their B2B suite, or if your locking rules are genuinely complicated, because it has the most capable rule builder in the category and six years of production use behind it. The deciding question is your Shopify plan. BSS does offer checkout restrictions, but the listing scopes them to Shopify Plus. On Basic, Grow or Advanced you are back to theme-side hiding, which is exactly the gap Prime Lock closes.

Everything BSS B2B Lock publishes, Prime Lock ships on the free plan

All 8 of them, at $0, plus checkout enforcement that BSS B2B Lock does not publish. Compare that with their free plan, described below.

Honest assessment

Where BSS B2B Lock is a good fit

BSS Commerce have been building B2B tooling for Shopify since 2019 and the depth shows. The centralised rule builder handles products, variants, collections, pages, blogs and raw URL patterns, and it does so without the rule list becoming unreadable once you pass a dozen entries, which is more than can be said for several competitors.

The suite argument is real. If you are already running BSS wholesale pricing, quote requests or a B2B portal, keeping the lock layer with the same vendor means one support team, one billing relationship and one set of conventions. That is a legitimate reason to choose an app, and we would not pretend otherwise.

It is also the only app here besides Locksmith that publishes checkout restrictions at all. That puts BSS ahead of most of this category on the thing we consider most important, with the plan caveat below.

The difference

Where Prime Lock is different

Prime Lock runs checkout validation through a Shopify Function. Functions execute server-side inside Shopify's own checkout pipeline on every Shopify plan, including Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, which is why we can ship the enforcement layer on the free tier. BSS publishes checkout restrictions too, but scopes them to Shopify Plus. If you are not on Plus, the practical difference is the whole point: your gate is cosmetic, and a cart permalink walks through it.

That is the entire argument, and it only matters if you are not on Plus. If you are on Plus and already invested in the BSS suite, the honest recommendation is to stay where you are and turn their checkout restrictions on.

The secondary difference is the registration and approval workflow, which is not in the BSS lock app's published feature set, because it lives in other apps in their suite. Prime Lock puts the form, the approval queue, the auto-tagging, the locks and the enforcement in one install.

Migration

Switching from BSS B2B Lock

  1. Step 1

    Note your existing rules

Write down every rule you have configured in BSS B2B Lock: what it protects, who it lets in, and any schedule attached to it. This is the only step that takes real time, and doing it before you install anything makes the rest mechanical.

  2. Step 2

    Recreate them as locks

Build each rule in Prime Lock as a lock: pick the lock type, set Applies to, set Who can unlock, and add a schedule if the original had one. Your customer tags carry over unchanged, because both apps read Shopify's native customer tags rather than storing their own copy.

  3. Step 3

Uninstall BSS B2B Lock and check your theme

BSS rules are held in their app, but if you enabled any of their theme-level integrations, confirm those blocks are removed from your theme customiser after uninstalling. After uninstalling, view a locked product as a guest and as a tagged customer, and try a direct cart permalink to confirm the checkout Function rejects it.
