Prime Lock vs Clay • B2B Lock & Hide Price

Clay is the newest app in the category and already carries the Built for Shopify badge, which is a good signal about how it was built. Unlimited lock rules, access by tag, specific customer or passcode link, plus email verification and customer tagging, all free. The caveat is track record: it launched in 2026 with a small review count, which matters more for a wholesale channel than for a passcode gate.

Everything Clay publishes, Prime Lock ships on the free plan

All 7 of them, at $0, plus checkout enforcement that Clay does not publish. Compare that with their free plan, described below.

Honest assessment

Where Clay is a good fit

Earning the Built for Shopify badge this early says something real about how the app was built, because it means clearing Shopify's performance and integration bar rather than shipping something that merely works.

Unlimited lock rules with individual on/off toggles is a small design decision that pays off in practice: being able to disable one rule while you debug it, without deleting and rebuilding it, is the kind of thing you appreciate on a live store at an awkward hour.

Access by tag, by specific customer or by passcode link, with email verification and customer tagging, covers the common cases, and all of it is free.

The difference

Where Prime Lock is different

Prime Lock compiles locks into a Shopify Function that validates cart and checkout server-side on every Shopify plan. Checkout validation is not in Clay's published feature set, so its gate is a storefront layer. A registration form and scheduled date windows are not in the published feature set either.

The other consideration is not a feature at all. Clay launched in 2026 with a small review count, so there is not much of a track record yet. For a passcode gate on a landing page that is fine. For a wholesale channel carrying real revenue, longevity and support depth are part of the decision, and both apps here are new. We launched in 2026 too, which is why we publish the grandfathering promise in our terms and answer support within 24 hours on every plan including free.

We would rather you weighed that honestly than took our word for it.

Migration

Switching from Clay

  1. Step 1

    Note your existing rules

Write down every rule you have configured in Clay: what it protects, who it lets in, and any schedule attached to it. This is the only step that takes real time, and doing it before you install anything makes the rest mechanical.

  2. Step 2

    Recreate them as locks

Build each rule in Prime Lock as a lock: pick the lock type, set Applies to, set Who can unlock, and add a schedule if the original had one. Your customer tags carry over unchanged, because both apps read Shopify's native customer tags rather than storing their own copy.

  3. Step 3

Uninstall Clay and check your theme

Clay is Built for Shopify and uses the app-embed pattern, so uninstalling should leave no theme code. Toggle its embed off in the theme customiser and confirm a previously locked page renders normally before removing it. After uninstalling, view a locked product as a guest and as a tagged customer, and try a direct cart permalink to confirm the checkout Function rejects it.
